Lacombe County to hold grand opening for new Burns Nature Park

Aug 22, 2023 | 10:35 AM

A grand opening is happening soon at the new Burns Nature Park in Lacombe County.

Located on the east side of Sylvan Lake and very west end of Aspelund Road (Township Road 394), Burns Nature Park is a 20-acre sanctuary stewarded by the County.

It was graciously donated by James and Patricia Burns, and features hiking trails, interpretive signage and bench areas, as well as a “breathtaking” view of Sylvan Lake.

“We are so pleased to offer this area to people of all ages and interests so they can enjoy the outdoors in our beautiful county,” says Reeve Barb Shepherd. “We thank the Burns family for their generous contribution to the residents and visitors of the Sylvan Lake area.”

The public is welcome at the grand opening, which goes from 12-3 p.m. on Sept. 8 at 2019 Township Road 39-4. A map to the site can be found here.

The event will include a free BBQ at noon, with a ceremony at 1 p.m. The Burns family will be in attendance in addition to County council and staff, and other dignitaries. It will officially open at 1:30.

The County adds that Burns Nature Park will provide immense benefits to the ecosystem of Sylvan Lake for generations to come.

Within the park are a poplar forest, riparian shoreline, and wetland area with numerous species of plants and animals.
