51 Avenue redevelopment nearing completion and roadway open to traffic

Aug 4, 2023 | 2:39 PM

Citizens of Ponoka are invited to explore 51 Avenue between 50 Street and 51 Street downtown, as work on phase two is nearing completion and the roadway is open to traffic.

Starting next week, Town officials say final line painting and markings will occur along the roadway.

The following improvements on 51 Avenue (between 50 Street and 51 Street) have been completed this construction season:

  • Replacement of temporary asphalt sidewalks with new permanent sidewalks;
  • Redevelopment and design improvements to the municipal parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue;
  • Final layer of asphalt paving on the roadway and line marking;
  • Installation of pedestrian crossings;
  • Landscaping including new shrubs and trees; and
  • Installation of benches and garbage receptacles.

Town officials say these improvements create more of an accessible, pedestrian-friendly environment, as 51 Avenue now features mid-block pedestrian crossings, new sidewalks and curbs with rolled edges for wheelchair accessibility.

The redevelopment of 51 Avenue also included extensive underground and surface infrastructure improvements. To see a list of these improvements that were completed in 2022, please visit the Town of Ponoka website at www.ponoka.ca/p/redevelopment-of-51-avenue.

Other Pavement and Concrete Improvements

Throughout Ponoka this Construction Season, the Town of Ponoka’s annual Pavement and Concrete Improvement Programs for 2023 are underway. Officials say these annual programs identify and prioritize aging roadways, sidewalks, curbs and gutters in Ponoka that require improvement and replacement based on the condition and priority of each piece of infrastructure within the Town’s roadway system.

Pavement and concrete improvements that are planned throughout Ponoka include:

Micro-surfacing on roadways – is set to begin in the coming weeks on the following roadways:

  • 51 Street (between Highway 2A and 53 Avenue);
  • 57 Avenue (between 50 and 54 Street); and
  • 50 Street (between 53 and 55 Avenue).

Town officials say micro-surfacing is an application where a special coating is added to the top layer of asphalt, which preserves the underlying pavement by preventing oxidization and moisture penetration. Micro-surfacing is said to be a cost-effective treatment that prolongs the life of the road by slowing down ongoing deterioration. This cost-effective process allows the Town of Ponoka to keep roadways in good condition and maximize the pavement lifecycle, say Town officials.

Multiple locations throughout Ponoka

Paving and concrete replacement and repair will also be happening at multiple locations throughout the Town of Ponoka during this construction season. The Pavement and Concrete Improvement Programs are described as an essential component of the Town of Ponoka’s commitment to the ongoing maintenance and continued improvement of municipal roadways and infrastructure.
