Equipment failure causes major power outage in north Red Deer

Aug 2, 2023 | 4:28 PM

Equipment failure was the cause of a major power outage throughout most of north Red Deer on Wednesday.

According to Alex Monkman, Acting Utilities Manager, City of Red Deer, crews with The City’s Electric, Light and Power (EL&P) department were notified of the outage around 11:00 a.m..

He says most of the city north of 67 Street was affected but the power was restored to most residents and businesses by 12:30 p.m. Traffic lights were also out, noted Monkman.

He says the equipment failure took place in the Olymel and Civic Yards area of north Red Deer. Monkman anticipates customers in that area should have their power fully restored by 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
