Geodesic greenhouse at Red Deer Food Bank to provide sustainable food source

A new structure has been gaining attention at the Red Deer Food Bank property on 49 Avenue.

Officials say the geodesic dome that has been under construction for the past several days is a new greenhouse that will supply fresh leafy vegetables to clients of the Food Bank and provide urban agriculture programming in the coming weeks.

On Friday, July 28, 2023, between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the Red Deer Food Bank will be hosting an open house with its partners from Green Iglu and Relay Education in the new Geodesic Green House Dome located at the corner behind the Red Deer Food Bank at Bay 12, 7429 – 49 Avenue, Red Deer.

Food Bank officials say the Open House will be an opportunity to share the greenhouse development and discuss the benefits this infrastructure is anticipated to produce for the community. It is also expected to be an opportunity to share the work being done by the Food Bank’s partners in providing the Sustainable Agricultural course for local people.

Officials say the completion of the greenhouse signals the next phase of the Sustainable Agriculture course run by Relay Education and Green Iglu that is planned to culminate in over 40 people trained and both the greenhouse and hydroponic sea can, soon to be operating at the Food Bank.

The Food Bank says the program is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program. Relay Education is the recipient of the funding and is working with partners, like Red Deer Food Bank and Green Iglu to offer this program.

The public is welcome to attend to learn more about these new initiatives and programs at the Red Deer Food Bank.
