11th annual Step ‘n Stride fundraiser for Parkinson’s disease comes to Red Deer this September

The Parkinson Association of Alberta (PAA) has announced its 11th annual Step ‘n Stride fundraiser in Red Deer this September.

Taking place in nine communities across Alberta, Red Deer’s fundraiser will be on Saturday, September 9 beginning at the Golden Circle (4620 47a Ave.).

The Association also held their kick-off barbeque yesterday at Kiwanis Park (4500 Fountain Dr.).

PAA states the Red Deer Region serves as their largest land area and the third most clients for their association, with support groups also in Lacombe, Olds and Rocky Mountain House.

Every September, participants from across Alberta walk for Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson Plus Syndromes which affects more than 1 in 500 people across Canada, 15,000 Albertans, and thousands as caregivers and family members.

They say Parkinson’s disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world, with rates continuing to increase, and still without a cure.

According to the National Institute of Health, Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination.

The Association say the event has raised more than $3.5 million dollars for their services, programs, advocacy efforts and research contributions and has served as a way to celebrate the victories of those affected.

This year’s theme is “#WhoAreYouWalkingFor?”.

“Whether you know someone with Parkinson disease or are diagnosed, there are stories to share about the challenges and wins of the Parkinson’s journey,” said PAA officials in a release.

In 2022, Step ‘n Stride raised over $325,000 and their goal for 2023 is to raise $400,000. Their Red Deer goal in particular is to raise $20,000.

The Association says members from their Board fo Directors will be present at the walks to share motivational messages alongside other special guests.

PAA officials say they have no permanent or consistent funding from outside sources, including government, and rely on the generosity of donors, grants, memberships and fundraising initiatives to provide necessary funds for their services. They say Step ‘n Stride is their largest fundraiser of the year and accounts for over 20 per cent of their annual budget.

Registration in Red Deer is at 9 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10 a.m.
