Japanese high school students to arrive in Red Deer Sunday

Jul 21, 2023 | 10:40 AM

Eleven high school students from Japan are once again headed to Red Deer this summer.

The group from Toshimagaoka Joshi Gakuen High School arrive July 23 and depart August 4. It is the first organized trip to Red Deer for Japanese students since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students will enjoy a welcome ceremony this Sunday, and then take in educational programs at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School, along with local sightseeing.

Host families are organized through MLI Homestay.

“It is a very enriching experience for international students to travel to Canada and participate in the day-to-day life, and it is also a fulfilling experience for our wonderful local host families who learn a bit about the students’ Japanese culture while sharing their own with the students over a short period of time,” MLI says in a media release.

“We hope as folks see the students and their hosts on the streets that they will extend them our warm Alberta welcome. This is truly a once in a lifetime trip and they have chosen our community.”

MLI says it is always looking for new hosts. More information is at mlihomestay.com.
