Red Deer River Naturalists summer events

Jul 14, 2023 | 1:14 PM

UPDATE July 21 – The Red Deer River Naturalists have changed location of their August event due to low water. See more below.

We invite you to join Nature Central/Red Deer River Naturalists (RDRN) on July 23, 2023 for a captivating experience with Mr. David Delafield, Assistant Professor of Outdoor Leadership, Burman University, as your guide!

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of a serene paddle on a local water body. Do not miss this opportunity to create lasting memories and embrace the wonders of nature!

Location: Magee Lake Public Access, Pin: https://goo.gl/maps/s8ju5GpPNWWT5r5B9

Directions: From QEII, take exit #431 onto Milton/Gadsby Lake Road, proceed East for 19.5km to Rge Road 243. The road will dead-end at the lake. Meet at the boat launch at the end of Rge Road 243. Road surface on Rge Road 243 is gravel and well maintained.
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

All participants should come prepared for 2-3 hours on the water with snacks, water, sunscreen, bug spray and suitable clothing for the weather. The trip will begin with a safety briefing on shore followed by a leisurely paddle and a series of short cultural and natural history interpretations. After the led portion of the trip, participants are encouraged to explore the rest of the lake and lakeshore. Adequate parking and port-a-potties are available. Whether you decide to register ahead or show up on the day of the event, the choice is yours. For those who wish to register, please email: epc.rdrn.nature@gmail.com.

***Evening Nature/Photography Paddle with Nature Central & RDRN at Haunted Lakes

When: August 2, 2023 starting at 7:00 p.m. Your Hosts: Myrna Pearman & Claudia Lipski. Come enjoy a relaxing paddle at the Narrows Provincial Recreation Area on Buffalo Lake.

This event was originally at the Narrows but was changed due to low water.

Location: Haunted Lakes on the north end of the Haunted Lakes Golf Club and Campground on HWY 601 in Alix. (Pin: 52°24’07.9″N 113°09’03.6″W)

Expect to encounter a wide variety of bird species, including White-faced Ibis, Sora, Black Tern, Forster’s Tern, Common Tern and Black-necked Stilt.

There is no formal boat launch at this site, so participants should have water shoes and be comfortable with getting in and out of a water vessel from a muddy shoreline. However, you’ll find ample parking and an outhouse facility.

This trip will be considered an “informal” paddle. Each participant must sign a waiver, have some prior canoeing/kayaking experience, have proper life jackets and safety equipment, and follow all regulations related to small water vessels.

Items to bring: kayak or canoe, life jacket, snacks, water, binoculars, camera/phone, sunscreen and bug spray.

Maximum 20 participants, secure your spot by registering at nir.rdrn.nature@gmail.com.
