Ponoka Aquaplex to host activities for National Drowning Prevention Week

Jul 13, 2023 | 3:39 PM

The Ponoka Aquaplex will be hosting a variety of activities in recognition of National Drowning Prevention Week.

Officials say over 400 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents every year.

From July 17-21, National Drowning Prevention Week aims to help build skills and awareness about these incidents in an effort to prevent such tragedies.

The activities planned at the Aquaplex (5315 46 Ave.) include:

  • A daily ‘Swim to Survive’ skills challenge – From 1 – 4 p.m. each day from Monday to Friday. Participants who complete the challenge will receive a Canadian Swim to Survive Certificate.
  • A daily Pool Scavenger Hunt during public swim – Participants can find items around the pool and be entered in a draw to win a prize.
  • A Free Swim and Outdoor Community BBQ – On Wednesday, July 19, the free swim will run from 1 – 4 p.m. along with games and activities in and out of the pool. The BBQ will run from 3 – 5 p.m. and will move indoors at the Aquaplex if it rains.
