New soccer pitch opens at Fairview Elementary

A new soccer pitch has opened up on the grounds of Fairview Elementary (5901 55 Street).

The field was made possible thanks to community donations, including from the Optimist Club of Red Deer, and Hugh Kellough, as well as a grant from the ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

“Our students are driven and motivated by soccer. They love the game but have always had a pretty bare field. Along with interest and physical fitness, the game of soccer teaches kids valuable life lessons that can help them navigate through life,” said Teresa Tataryn, Principal at Fairview.

“Kids of all backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses deserve the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of soccer, and the positive impact that it has on their community. This project will increase the knowledge and capacity of our school and teachers to support quality sport programming and physical activity. We are excited to develop both the physical skills and intrinsic motivations of physical literacy among our students and their families.”
