23 Languages

Indigenous language translation services now offered by Alberta Health Services

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced new translation services.

The agency is now offering interpretation services in 23 Indigenous languages. This is available to all patients receiving care from AHS health care teams.

Indigenous translation services are now available in the languages listed below:

• Algonquian
• Blackfoot
• Chipewyan
• Cree – James Bay
• Cree – Moose
• Cree – Plains
• Cree – Swampy
• Cree – Woodlands
• Dakota
• Dene
• Dogrib
• Ojibway
• Inuinnaqtun Inuktitut
• Michif
• Micmac
• Mohawk
• North Slavey
• Oji-Cree
• Salish
• Salteaux
• Slavey
• Slavey South
• Tsilhqotin

The addition of Indigenous languages to AHS’ translation service builds off more than 240 languages that are already offered for interpretation through Health Link 811 and at AHS sites. The availability of interpreters may vary based on the rarity of the language, as well as call volumes and the time of day. AHS added that translation of written patient-related records or educational materials is also available.
