Chinook’s Edge congratulates first graduates from Vet Tech Assistant – dual credit program

Jun 14, 2023 | 11:25 AM

Officials with Chinook’s Edge School Division are congratulating their first class of graduates from the Veterinary Technical Assistant Certificate (VTA) dual credit program from Olds College of Agriculture and Technology.

The students had the opportunity to walk the convocation stage last week with other Olds College graduates. In total, 58 high school students completed the VTA Certificate, and 51 made it to the convocation event. Of the 58 graduates, 10 were from Chinook’s Edge School Division.

The Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic, Wolf Creek, Red Deer Catholic, Clearview, Golden Hills and Rocky View School Divisions also had students in the cohort. Division officials say graduates from the program are qualified to work in vet clinics, although some of the students utilize the program as a foundation for further training in animal health. Officials say the five-course VTA program trains students for the veterinary industry with animal care practices needed for an entry-level position in the animal health field.

According to Chinook’s Edge, students learn to work with small animals and support procedures of the veterinary industry. The students in the VTA program were chosen in June 2022, based on their ability to handle the regular workload of high school as well as five additional college courses.
