Lindsay Thurber band and choir win big at MusicFest Canada

A recent trip to MusicFest Canada turned out some succesful performances by the Lindsay Thurber band and choir.

Members of the Lindsay Thurber Symphonic Band and Advanced Contemporary Ensemble (ACE Choir) experienced the invite-only national festival recently in Niagara Falls, bringing home a couple of awards to boot.

The Symphonic Band earned gold, while ACE returns with silver.

“We reserved time for our students to hear other groups,” said Jennifer Mann, band teacher, noting the trip was special to take after COVID halted anything of the sort for several years.

“We created a listening guide for our students, and once they had the chance to listen to other groups, we asked them questions and to reflect on what they heard. The depth of thought in students’ responses was amazing.”

Both groups also had a workshop with one of the adjudicators, which benefitted their teachers as well.

Mann herself received the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director’s Award at the festival, something extra special for her as Keith was her father-in-law.

“Keith was instrumental in putting together MusicFest,” said Mann. “It’s really special to be able to honour his legacy and to continue doing what he did.”

MusicFest Canada had over 8,000 participants.
