UPDATE: Red Deer RCMP resolve bomb threat at Central Middle School

Jun 1, 2023 | 10:54 AM

Update 2:05 p.m. –  Red Deer RCMP are advising the public that the previously unfolding event at Central Middle School in downtown Red Deer has been resolved.

Officers say they have identified and located a suspect and are currently in contact with the individual at their home.

They confirm there is no risk to the students or staff.

Red Deer RCMP have cleared Central Middle School, confirming that students and staff have begun to return to the building and resume classes at the direction of the public school Board.

It was at just after 9:30 Thursday morning when RCMP were notified of a bomb threat made over the telephone to Central Middle School.

In an email to parents, Red Deer Public Schools said the following:

“Earlier this morning, students and staff at Central Middle School were safely evacuated to Gaetz United Church on the advice of the RCMP following a bomb threat. Red Deer RCMP have identified and apprehended a suspect and the school was searched. It was deemed safe by the RCMP for students and staff to return. Staff and students are safely returning to school. Teaching and learning will continue as normal this afternoon.”

While it is unconfirmed if the individual was a student at the school, RCMP have confirmed that they are a minor as their Youth & Community Action Team is involved.

Red Deer RCMP thanks the public school division, the students, staff, and the public for their cooperation.

One Grade 6 student at Central, who asked rdnewsNOW to refer to her as Robin, described the experience.

“My school got threatened with something today and we don’t know what it is. They wouldn’t tell us. We had to evacuate to a church and I got to sit next to two of my best friends. I don’t think I would’ve been able to keep myself together if they weren’t there,” she said. “I’m still incredibly scared from what happened and I’m so glad that my dad came to get me to take me home, I don’t know what to do. I’m still so scared.”

Red Deer Public confirms its central office, which is located on the same site as Central Middle, was not evacuated. It also says supports are available to students who need it.

Police continue to investigate.
