Special Olympics Alberta – Red Deer Affiliate is hosting their 15th annual Celebrity Breakfast this June.

On June 15 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Westerner Park’s Harvest Centre (4847A 19 St), officials say the event is for fundraising and friend-raising.

The non-profit organization provides sport and social opportunities for individuals of all ages with an intellectual disability.

They say funds raised at the event will be used to cover their uniform and equipment, facility, transportation, accommodation, volunteer training and administration costs as an affiliate.

This year’s celebrity will be Red Deer curler Brittany Tran who played for Team Alberta at the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Tran says her love for curling began at the age of six when her grandfather took her to the rink with her cousins to play in little rocks league.

Soon after, she started competing and had a successful junior career, winning silver at the Canada Winter Games in 2011 and the Canadian National Juniors in 2012.

Since then, she has competed at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts three times and is a two-time Mixed Doubles Alberta Champion. Most recently, she won the 2023 Alberta Women’s Provincials as third for Team Skrlik and competed at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts for Team Alberta.

In the past few years, Tran has become a champion for equity, diversity and inclusion in curling and is a Board member for UnitedWeCurl, a charity that focuses on making curling a welcoming and inclusive place for all.

When Tran is not on the ice, she can be found hiking, reading and travelling.
