Sylvan Lake installing 11 electric vehicle charging stations

May 28, 2023 | 10:00 AM

Eleven electric vehicle charging stations are set to be installed in Sylvan Lake.

The Town says this is possible due to grant money from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, which is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta.

Station locations are planned for the NexSource Centre, Centennial Park, and the library parking lot. Construction and installation of the $199,958 project wraps up this year, with the grant covering every cent of the budget.

“The Electric Vehicle Charging Program is designed to help communities prepare for the growth of electric vehicle adoption while meeting sustainability goals,” says Trina Innes, Executive Director, Sustainability Services, Alberta Municipalities.

“We are thrilled that the Town of Sylvan Lake is ensuring their community members and visitors have access to charging stations in high traffic areas. These stations will put Sylvan Lake on the electric vehicle charging map.”

Mayor Megan Hanson says new technology for residents is an exciting prospect.

“Our community is always looking for opportunities to engage with new partners in efforts to provide fresh innovation to our residents and visitors,” she says. “This investment helps align with our goal in ensuring a greener future for Lakers of today, tomorrow and for future generations. We look forward to Sylvan Lake embracing a new way to move their families around our community and beyond.”

There will be:

  • Five Level 2 charging stations
    • Each station can charge two vehicles at the same time
    • Level 2 Charging stations utilize 240 volts and can fully charge an EV in five to 10 hours
    • Locations: Centennial Park, Library parking lot, NexSource Centre
  • One Level 3 fast charger
    • Level 3 Charging Stations use high voltages to charge the batteries which can be topped up to 80 percent battery life in as little as half an hour
    • Location: NexSource Centre

Construction:

  • Centennial Park stations
    • Started in September 2022
  • Library Parking lot and the NexSource Centre
    • To be completed in spring 2023
