Town of Sylvan Lake upgrades water main line in new Grayhawk subdivision

The Town of Sylvan Lake says a water trunk main line will be upgraded in the new Grayhawk neighbourhood.

Town officials say when new subdivisions are built, developers must meet a minimum standard for infrastructure such as water mains. They say upgrading the water mains during construction of a subdivision is much cheaper than upgrading them years down the road.

The Town’s Water Master Plan, created by the Public Works Department, identified critical areas for this type of upgrade. Officials note the plan identified a water trunk main line in the new Grayhawk subdivision would be a good candidate to upgrade for future proofing.

The Town estimated that an upgrade would cost roughly $1,200,000.

Without an upgrade, they say the water main trunk line may only have been able to handle 10-15 years of growth. However, they say the new trunk line should be a permanent fix for any future population increase.

Rather than doing the work alone, the Town says they partnered with the Grayhawk developer Madlee to install the upgrade. They say while they estimated the cost for the shared upgrade, they did not allocate budget funds until Madlee provided final construction costs.

Officials confirm Madlee covered the costs of a 250 mm line, and the Town paid the extra to upgrade to a 400 mm line ($300,000).

The Town claims that efficient work from the Public Works Department, and collaboration with Madlee, realized a savings of approximately $900,000.
