The Red Deer Rebels completed a trade Friday morning that sees them acquire a blueliner from the Kelowna Rockets.

Coming to Red Deer is 20-year-old defenceman, Elias Carmichael, in exchange for a third round pick in the 2024 WHL Prospect Draft.

Carmichael, from Langley, B.C., had 29 points in 62 games with the Rockets during the 2022-23 WHL regular season. He was Kelowna’s second round pick, 40th overall, at the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft.

His games played, plus six goals and 23 assists, were all career highs, having played four seasons with the Rockets.

Along with Carmichael, the Rebels have a surplus of 20-year-olds (born in 2003) on the roster this off-season, with the maximum allowable during the regular season being three.

Craig Armstrong and Kai Uchacz both turn 20 before the 2023-24 WHL season begins. Captain Jayden Grubbe turned 20 in January and could return; meantime goaltender Chase Coward also turned 20 in January, and Marek Schneider turned 20 in February. Tayem Gislason, who was acquired from Prince Albert last October, but only played eight games for Red Deer, turned 20 last month.
