Funnel cloud advisory issued & hot weather ahead for Red Deer area

May 11, 2023 | 12:11 PM

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says conditions will be favourable today (May 11) for the development of funnel clouds.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado,” ECCC says.

“If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada. Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter.

Funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning, they add.

Continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ABstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ABStorm.

As well, unseasonably hot weather and dry conditions are expected this weekend.

“The highest temperatures are expected from Sunday through Tuesday. Daytime highs are expected to be in the high 20s to low 30s,” ECCC says. “Overnight and early morning lows are expected to be in the low teens. These daytime highs will be 10 to 15 degrees C above seasonal values. With elevated temperatures, the risk of heat related illnesses will increase.”
