Student census launched by Red Deer Public Schools

Red Deer Public Schools is launching a student census dubbed Count Me In.

Serving more than 11,000 students, the division hopes all will take part in the entirely voluntary and anonymous questionnaire between April 24-30.

For students in Kindergarten to Grade 3, parents are asked to complete the census with their child at home. Students in Grades 4-12 will have an opportunity to do so in the classroom.

“We know that not all students experience school in the same way. As one of Red Deer Public’s priorities is equity, the division is committed to ensuring all students feel represented in their school,” said Nicole Buchanan, Board Chair.

“Student responses to the census will help us ensure school is a welcoming place for all students. This is something that is extremely important to all of us. We want to ensure that every student feels like they belong and are served well by their school community.”

According to the division, questions will address ethnicity, religion or spiritual affiliation, gender identity, how students feel about their school, and activities students take part in at school and outside of school. Students in Grades 9-12 will also be asked about their sexual orientation.

“By learning more about our students, we can better understand the school experience and inform further actions that can be taken to support student success,” added Buchanan. “We look forward to seeing the results of the survey, and sharing them with the community in the future.”
