Man arrested after QEII traffic stop had loaded shotgun, police say

A 27-year-old central Alberta man has been charged following a routine traffic stop earlier this month.

Blackfalds RCMP say it was April 6 when an officer stopped a vehicle on the QEII Highway for a traffic violation.

After running checks, officers arrested the driver for outstanding warrants.

Officers then determined the vehicle did not have valid registration or insurance, and upon searching it, located:

· a loaded shotgun between the driver’s seat and the console

· multiple knives

· 34.7 grams of suspected fentanyl

Kalym Steven Taberner, of Springbrook, has been charged with:

· Possess firearm in contravention of regulation

· Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (x2)

· Unauthorized possession of firearm

· Possession of break in instruments

· Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

He was also given two provincial traffic tickets.

Taberner was taken before a Justice of the Peace where he was released from custody with his next court date set for May 4 at the Red Deer Courthouse.
