UPDATE: RDES responds to Normandeau house fire Sunday evening

Apr 9, 2023 | 7:22 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services responded to a house fire Sunday evening in the Normandeau area.

Crews arrived around 6:10 p.m. to a home, fully involved with fire on the rear side, at the corner of 59 Avenue and 70 St. Dr.

The roadway was blocked off for a couple hours.

Matt White, Acting Deputy Chief, says no one was harmed, nor was anyone actually home when the fire broke out on the home’s back side.

There were, however, two dogs, one ferret and a chameleon which were rescued from inside. Another ferret sadly died, while one cat is unaccounted for. There is no description of the cat available.

There are seven people, including five kids, who live in the home. White says the homeowner was alerted to the fire by his security system. The homeowner, as well as neighbours and onlookers called 911.

It remains too early to speak to the cause of the fire, though White says it definitely started on the exterior and moved inside. He does say it isn’t suspicious.

Severe damage to the patio area was evident to bystanders, and fire fighters were knocking the patio down as rdnewsNOW was on scene.

“The fire was on the back side of the structure and our members got a quick knockdown,” says White, first speaking to us at the scene, and then on Tuesday for an update.

“I will commend our crews for getting in and knocking it down before it got into the roof, because had it done so, it would be a different story. Crews got there in good time, with the closest station being #2 on 67 Street. They got their within a few minutes and started getting water on the back side.”

The home is salvageable, but will need major repairs. None of the neighbouring homes were damaged.

The family, White shares, had places to stay with friends and family.

Four engines, a ladder, one ambulance, a platoon vehicle and 24 fire fighters were on scene.
