RDES investigating possible gas leak

Apr 4, 2023 | 4:44 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) responded to a possible gas leak at a multi-family residential unit on Ironstone Drive in the Inglewood neighbourhood Tuesday afternoon.

There were no injuries, but City officials note that occupants of the building evacuated for a over three hours, with City transit busses on scene to provide a warm space for evacuees.

Carol Lind, the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator, said the call came in at around 1:11 p.m. and roughly 50 people evacuated.

Christy Cornell, Sunreal Property Manager for Iron Creek Lofts, said a tenant in one of the 63 units called ATCO gas after her personal carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor went off, notifying her of high levels.

She said ATCO, also on scene, shut off the gas. She stated the building has not had any issues with high carbon dioxide levels in the past.

“Emergency Services has been wonderful, the owners have been cooperative, so it’s been the best it can be in an emergency situation for sure,” said Cornell.

RDES is investigating the cause.

Ironstone Drive from 30 Avenue to Inglewood Drive was closed to traffic for the duration of the evacuation.
