Further updates to this story after April 6, 2023 are not anticipated…

UPDATE 2: April 6, 2023

RCMP now say they did not have enough information to substantiate the presence of a firearm in an incident in Sylvan Lake on March 30 (more information below).

The male youth was released without charges, and the file has been closed, confirms Alberta RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

“In today’s day and age, RCMP, schools and everyone is in the position where anything involving threats, guns or weapons in a school has to be taken very seriously,” says Savinkoff. “We as an organization have to ensure all protocols are used to ensure the safety of all students. Anything involving weapons or threats in a school, people need to be aware that’s not a minor thing.”

UPDATE 1: 1 p.m., March 30, 2023

RCMP and Chinook’s Edge School Division confirm the lock down is over.

Charges are pending against one male youth, who has been taken into custody, RCMP say.

There is no longer a threat to the community, say RCMP.

“We sent messaging home to parents indicating that, if any student was uncomfortable during the process, we have access for them to see a family school wellness worker,” says Kurt Sacher, Chinook’s Edge superintendent.

More to come…
