On the same night, the RDP Kings and Queens hockey teams became ACAC champions.

The Kings beat NAIT 2-1 for the best-of-five series sweep at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Meantime, from Edmonton, the Queens knocked off NAIT 2-1 in overtime to also sweep their best-of-five against the Ooks.

For the Kings, it’s their first championship since the 1993-94 season.

The Kings came out hot, firing 17 shots in the first period to NAIT’s three, but netminder Ryley Osland kept the score knotted at zero.

The teams traded goals in the second, with Holden Knights (Education) tying it up with 1:33 to go in the period.

Erik Miller (Business Administration) scored the game-winner at 1:17 of the third, and the Kings held on for the win. Arik Weersink (Business Administration) stopped 23 pucks for RDP and was named player of the game.

or the Queens, it was Natalie Buttle (Kinesiology) scoring late in the first, and then NAIT tying it late in the second.

A scoreless third led to Avery Lajeunnesse (Education) potting the title-clinching goal in OT.

Goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Science in Pre-opt) made 30 saves and was named player of the game.

The championship is the Queens’ second straight.

These titles end the RDP Athletics schedule for 2022-23. An awards banquet is happening April 5.
