Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas not seeking re-election

Mar 24, 2023 | 3:01 PM

Alberta’s Minister of Environment and Protected Areas has announced she is not seeking re-election in the upcoming provincial election May 29, 2023.

Sonya Savage, MLA for Calgary-North West, made the announcement on Twitter Friday afternoon, noting her desire to spend more time with her family.

Savage says, however, she will continue to serve out her term and support Premier Smith and the UCP in the upcoming election.

Danielle Smith, Leader of the United Conservative Party of Alberta, issued the following statement on Sonya Savage’s announcement that she will not seek re-election.

“Minister Sonya Savage’s dedication and commitment to furthering Alberta’s energy interests and developing a Made-in-Alberta approach to responsible environmental stewardship of our natural resources will benefit Albertans for decades.

Although Sonya will be greatly missed, it is gratifying to know she will be able to spend more time with her best friend and husband, Eric, as well as their family.

Along with Grande Prairie – Wapiti, I will be working with the party and local constituency association to appoint a UCP candidate through Section 8 of our Candidate Selection Process so the candidate can get to work immediately keeping Calgary-North West a UCP stronghold on May 29.”
