Calgary man charged after crime spree through Alberta and B.C.

A man from Calgary police say is a “prolific property offender” has been arrested once again.

RCMP in Didsbury say it was 12:30 p.m. on March 13 when they were notified of a black 2003 Ford F350 that had purportedly been stolen from the parking lot of the local courthouse.

The truck was tracked to a hardware store in Crossfield where it was found abandoned.

Investigators then confirmed that a white 2017 GMC Sierra truck, stolen from Cranbrook, B.C. on March 7, picked up the suspect from the other truck theft and then departed the area. The first suspect at this point was now driving the white truck, police say, with the second suspect now a passenger.

Thanks to help from multiple jurisdictions and agencies, the white truck was located and a surveillance operation ensued.

The GMC was seen in Airdrie speeding during high pedestrian and vehicle traffic times. The suspect vehicle continued into Calgary, police say, where the operation was assisted by Calgary Police. The truck is said to have continued being operated in a dangerous manner, including through residential neighbourhoods and driving down public walking paths.

The truck was eventually ditched south of the airport and the suspects fled on foot. K9 patrol then assisted in arresting the driver, while the original driver of the white truck got away.

Approximately $35,000 worth of allegedly stolen property was located within the Ford F350 and GMC Sierra trucks, which has been subsequently linked to property crimes in Alberta and British Columbia, police say. The recovered property includes:

  • Honda 5000 Generator stolen from a work site in Calgary;
  • Geographical imagining equipment stolen from a worksite in Calgary;
  • Stolen electrical wire from Sparwood BC.;
  • Stolen pedal bikes from Didsbury, AB.;
  • Stolen electrical wire from Tsuu T’ina Nation, AB.;
  • Stolen inventory scanners from Calgary, AB.;
  • Stolen 2017 GMC Sierra truck from Cranbrook, BC.;
  • Stolen 2003 Ford F350 truck stolen from Didsbury, AB.;
  • Stolen credit cards and personal identification.

Approximate total value of the stolen property recovered, including the vehicles, was $130,000.

Kyle Vaughan, 37, a prolific property offender from Calgary, was arrested and transported back to Didsbury RCMP Detachment. Vaughan was charged with 23 Criminal Code offences, including possession of stolen property and dangerous driving. He was remanded into custody to appear March 16 in Airdrie.

Police say this investigation is ongoing as investigators are in the process of identifying the owners of additional recovered property and returning identified property to the rightful owners.

“This operation was a collaborative effort by the RCMP Detachments in Didsbury and Airdrie, the Southern Alberta RCMP Crime Reduction Unit, and Calgary Police Service, to apprehend a property offender who has been targeting communities in Alberta and British Columbia, while minimizing the risk to public safety,” says Staff Sgt. Browne, Commander of Didsbury RCMP Detachment.

“These are not victimless crimes and every effort should be made to ensure these habitual or prolific offenders are held accountable for their actions.”
