CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND

RDP Athletes of the Week, plus weekend schedule

Mar 15, 2023 | 10:11 AM

The RDP Athletes of the Week for March 14 are Izzy Palumbo and Jacob Wozney.

Izzy Palumbo
Hometown: Golden, BC
Bachelor of Commerce (2nd year)

After a stellar weekend in goal, goaltender Izzy Palumbo is this week’s Queens Athlete of the Week. She was huge for the Queens Hockey team this past week as she steered aside 48 shots and just let in two goals in the two playoff games against the Lakeland College Rustlers. Palumbo needed to be on her game. Between her and the Rustlers goaltender, she had more work as the Queens were outshot in both games. But it was the stellar performance that made Palumbo stand out from the other goaltender as she backstopped her team to a 2-0 series victory and a chance to win a second consecutive championship trophy. She also came up big when her team committed errors in the defensive zone. The Polytechnic is the defending champions after they swept the Olds College Broncos in last year’s final. In the regular season, the Golden native just allowed six goals in five starts, had a 0.84 goals-against average, a .944 save percentage and three shutouts. Congratulations Izzy and we look forward to cheering you on this weekend as you and the Queens fight for another championship!

Jacob Wozney
Hometown: Richmond, BC
Bachelor of Education – Secondary (4th year)

What an offensive explosion from forward Jacob Wozney this past weekend that helped his team leap into the championship final. It all started on Friday night when the Kings took on the Concordia University Thunder in Game 1 of the semi-finals. Wozney would pick up a goal in a 5-4 triple overtime loss in Red Deer which put the Kings in a do-or-die situation on Saturday night. The Richmond native would pick up another goal to make it two goals in two games. But it was the timing of the goal that made it so special. The Thunder and the Kings managed to go to a third overtime period for the second consecutive night but this time the Polytechnic would come on top after Wozney walked into Concordia’s zone and sniped a beautiful wrist shot over the Thunder goaltender to win it and send Game 3 back to Red Deer. On top of this, he added three assists on Sunday night in the 5-3 series-clinching win to make it a total of five points on the weekend. Heading into the post-season Wozney contributed nine goals and nine assists for a total of 18 points which was good enough for fifth on his team. Congratulations Jacob and we also look forward to cheering you and the Kings on this weekend as you fight for your first championship since the 1993/1994 season.
