This week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

Mar 7, 2023 | 3:27 PM

The athletics schedule is slowly coming to a close as RDP is in the midst of championship season, otherwise known as March Madness.

As of right now, there is a chance that four playoff hockey games could be played at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, so still lots of opportunities to come out and support your Kings and Queens as they make a push for the championship finals.

The Queens will start things off on Friday with a late afternoon game starting at 4:30 p.m. as they take on the Lakeland College Rustlers. They will head off to Lloydminster for the second game of the series with a chance of a third game in Red Deer.

With the Kings having a bye to the semi-finals, they will get their first crack at playoff hockey this season when they take on the Concordia University Thunder at 8 pm on Friday. They will head off to Edmonton for the second game of the series and if necessary, a third game back in Red Deer on Sunday.

Women’s Ice Hockey Quarterfinals (Best-of-three-game-series)

Queens (14-4-2) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (10-8-2)

  • Friday, March 10 | 4:30 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre
  • Saturday, March 11 | 7 p.m. in Lloydminster
  • Sunday, March 12 | 8 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre (If necessary)

After a 14-4-2 record, the Queens ended their season in second place behind their archrivals the NAIT Ooks. The Polytechnic was just three points behind the Ooks in the standings.

The Queens will start their playoff run this weekend as they take on the Lakeland College Rustlers who finished third in the conference. In the five games these two teams played against each other, the Queens won four with the Rustlers only winning one in overtime The Queens have managed to outscore their opponent for this weekend 10-5. Forward Madison Sansom (Social Work), forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) and forward Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education) have each scored twice against the Rustlers.

At the end of the regular season, forward Avery Lajeunnesse led her team in points with 14. Lajeunnesse and Sansom are tied for the team lead in goals with eight and Soyko leads the Queens in assists with nine. Goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) not only leads the team’s three goaltenders with a 0.84 goals-against-average, a 1.000-win percentage and a .955 save percentage, but she also is in first place on the ACAC leaderboard in all three categories.

The Queens playoff run will start at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Men’s Ice Hockey Semi-finals (Best-of-three-game-series)

Kings (17-6-1) vs NAIT Ooks (10-7-7)

  • Friday, March 10 | 8 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre
  • Saturday, March 11 | 7 p.m. in Edmonton
  • Sunday, March 12 | 4:30 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre (If necessary)

A 17-6-1 record on the regular season was good enough to give the Kings Hockey team a week off from game action as they earned themselves a bye to the semi-finals which kick-off this weekend. The Kings finished in first place with 35 points which was three points ahead of the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings, who also earned themselves a bye to the semi-finals this weekend.

The Kings will take on the Concordia University Thunder who were the lowest-ranked team in the playoffs. They managed to upset the SAIT Trojans and needed all three games to find a winner.

The Polytechnic is quite familiar with the Thunder as their final two regular season games were against each other. In the season series, the Kings and Thunder both have won two to split the four games. But the Red Deer men’s team has outscored Concordia 10-7.

Forward Dylan Esau (Business Diploma) led his team with three goals against the Thunder in the four against each other. Forward Jacob Kendall (Bachelor of Education) finished off the regular season with 15 goals which led the Kings and the ACAC. Goaltender Arik Weersink was the starter for the majority of the games this season and is coming into the playoffs on a two-game goalless streak. He finished first in the conference with an .857 winning percentage and second in the ACAC with a 2.76 goals-against-average.

The Kings will kickstart their 2023 playoffs at home on Friday with the puck dropping just after 8 p.m., following the end of the Queens game.
