The Queens week did not start as planned. But they managed to take the early lead in the game on Thursday night in Olds. Within the game’s first minute, Queens defense Jordyn McLaughlin (Bachelor of Kinesiology) crashed the net and scored her third goal of the season. Forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) would score goal number eight of the season but that’s where the goal’s stopped for the Queens. The Broncos would score two in the second period to tie it up and end up winning 3-2 in a shootout. Sansom was awarded the player of the game.

The Polytechnic bounced back on Friday night in their final regular season game. The Queens would score in the game’s first minute for the second night in a row. Forward Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) would score one of her two goals, earning her the player of the game award. Defense Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scored her team’s third goal on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Broncos. Buttle was awarded the player of the game honour.

They will now enter the playoffs in a best-of-three-game series with the Lakeland College Rustlers starting on Friday in Red Deer. The Rustlers finished in third place, eight points behind the Queens who have won four of the five games against Lakeland in the regular season.

It was a tough start to the championships for both the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and Mixed Curling Clubs. The Queens would defeat the SAIT Trojans 10-0 on Friday to begin the bonspiel, but the Mixed team fell in a nail-biting 7-6 loss to the Portage College Voyageurs. But in the evening draw, the Queens were defeated by the University of Alberta-Augusta Vikings 8-2 with the Mixed team losing its second of the day 8-4 to the host Lakeland College Rustlers.

But on Saturday, the Mixed team found their winning ways with a 5-4 victory over the NAIT Ooks which put them in the 3v4 page playoff game. They would defeat the Voyageurs 10-3 but would fall to the Rustlers again 8-4 in the semi-finals. They finished off their weekend with a bronze medal after defeating Portage College 10-3 for the second straight game.

In the playoffs for the Queens, they were forced to forfeit the 3v4 page playoff game against the Trojans. These two teams will face off again in the bronze medal match, but the Queens would fall just short and finish in fourth after a 6-4 loss.

The Queens will still head off to nationals in Sudbury, ON from March 15-19.
