Special Recognition

Four RDP Queens named ACAC Curling All-Stars

Red Deer Polytechnic and the Athletics department are pleased to recognize skip Kaylee Raniseth, third Cuyler Desormeau and lead Jaycee Bourke as they were named to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s All-Conference team. Lead Reegan Cox has also been named an all-star but in the ACAC Mixed division.

The three Queens were instrumental to the team’s perfect 5-0 record at the Winter Regional which placed them in first before the championship weekend. Cox is a first-year on an all-rookie mixed team who does a great job at setting up each end.

Kaylee Raniseth (Skip)

Kaylee Raniseth is in her second year of the Bachelor of Education-Elementary program and is from Delburne. She was a third on the team last year that fell just short of the gold medal against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.

Skipping the team this year, Raniseth has led the Queens to an 8-3 record which gives them the number one seed heading into the championship. Unfortunately, Raniseth will not be competing for the Queens as she is representing Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island but will be curling for the Polytechnic at nationals in Sudbury, ON from March 15-19, 2023.

Head Coach Brad Hamilton explained Raniseth is a curler through and through.

“She understands the game incredibly well so she does a great job at calling the game. Her shot-making ability is out of this world and her teammates have 100 per cent confidence that she will make the shot.”

Hamilton added that she brings a ton of experience to this team with her competing in all different levels of the sport.

Raniseth was named the Queens Athlete of the Week back on January 23 as she skipped her team to a perfect 5-0 record.

Cuyler Desormeau (Third)

Cuyler Desourmeau is new to the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Curling Club this season and is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. She has some competitive curling experience at the U18 level before coming over to the Polytechnic and is from Red Deer County.

She is a third on the Queens team but also has skipped a few games. The head coach said Desormeau is technically sound when it comes to the game of curling.

“She actually has played a huge part this season as she stepped into the skip role for a few games during the Fall Regional and the team performed well. She understands the game and is a good shot-maker. It is quite a big jump for a first-year playing in third so it goes to show just how talented she really is.”

At the Fall Regional, the Queens finished off with a 3-2 record which put them in a three-way tie for second place.

Jaycee Bourke (Lead)

Jaycee Bourke has the most years under her belt at the college level as she is in her fourth year with the team and she throws the lead rocks for the Queens. She is also enrolled in the Bachelor of Education-Elementary program and is from Red Deer.

Before she came over to the Polytechnic four years ago, she had some high school curling experience.

When he was interviewed about Bourke, Hamilton was quite excited to hear she was getting recognized as an all-star.

“She has improved a ton. Just the amount of improvement is ridiculous. She is also on the Student-Athletes Advisory Council. Her slide and sweeping have improved so much in her four years. I am ecstatic that she is getting the recognition that she 100 percent has earned. Jaycee does a good job at putting the rock in the right spot.”

According to her teammates and her coaches, she is considered the mom of the team as she looks after her teammates.

Reegan Cox (Lead)

Reegan Cox is also a local curler and throws the lead rocks for the Mixed Curling Club at RDP. She is from Lacombe and is in her first year of the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences.

Like Bourke, Cox also just had high school curling experience before she came to the team.

Hamilton said she is quite quiet but definitely makes a difference on the pebble for the mixed team as they also sit in first place as they head into the championship.

“She has a great slide and does a great job at setting up ends. Often you will have some leads who can draw or hit well but Reegan does both very well. She loves to improve and sometimes you do not know with how quiet she is if she is taking in the advice we are giving but she is also asking questions and wanting to improve.”

Hamilton added Cox will be back with the team next year. The Lacombe native and the rest of the Mixed Team are in Vermilion as they look to compete for a gold medal and a championship banner.
