Rebels give up late lead in OT loss to Bedard-led Pats

Mar 4, 2023 | 8:31 PM

For one last time, the Red Deer Rebels took on Connor Bedard Saturday night on the road in Regina.

A night after Bedard singlehandedly took down the CHL’s top team — the Winnipeg Ice — with five points, the Rebels and Pats skated to a 6-5 OT win in Regina’s favour.

With the result, the season series ends with each team winning one game in regulation, and each team winning a 6-5 result in overtime.

The four-game season series also saw Bedard collect three goals and seven assists, including one and three in the final meeting.

Scoring summary

Red Deer got down to business quickly on this night, Frantisek Formanek (12th) scoring just 58 seconds in.

At 9:57, however, it was — who else — Connor Bedard (59th) getting it back on the power play.

But before the first was done, Ollie Josephson (5th) restored the one-goal lead for Red Deer at 17:04.

In the second, Red Deer extended its lead as leading scorer Kai Uchacz (46th) scored at 9:47 for a 3-1 lead.

But just 26 seconds later, Stanislav Svozil (10th) once again cut the Pats’ deficit to just one — Bedard assisting.

Regina kept the pressure on, and at 11:30 got the equalizer off the stick of Riley Ginnell (7th).

The goals kept on coming in the second as Ben King (17th) scored with the man advantage at 15:19 for the 4-3 lead headed to the intermission. On the goal, Mats Lindgren earned his third assist of the night.

In the final frame, there was nothing doing until Regina tied things up with just 6:26 on the clock; Borya Valis (19th) scored with a little help again from Bedard.

For the home team, this was their chance to break through, and they did just that.

With 4:58 remaining, Regina took its first lead of the night as Valis (20th) tallied again, putting one past Kyle Kelsey to put his side up 5-4.

But the Rebels weren’t going to quit — Captain Jayden Grubbe (16th) scored the clutch game-tying goal with 52 seconds left in regulation, and it was 5-5 headed to overtime.

And in the extra frame, it was the Pats’ Alexander Suzdalez (35th) poking the puck by Kelsey for the win just 55 seconds in.
