Make it 13 in a row. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens survived a late second-half comeback by the Keyano College Huskies and now move on to the semi-finals.

The last time these two teams faced off was way back on November 18 when the Huskies defeated the Queens 67-57. But a lot of basketball has been played since then as the Queens went on a 12-game winning streak to give them the second seed in the South Division. On the other hand, the Huskies defeated the NAIT Ooks in a play-in game last week to give them the third seed in the North Division.

Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) would open the scoring right off the jump-ball to put the Queens up early. At the first timeout of the game called by the Huskies, the Queens jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Polytechnic was using its speed early on in the game and its size in the paint to pick up the rebounds which gave them the early jump over Keyano College. The Queens offense was running on all cylinders as they would take a 28-12 lead into the second quarter, but the Huskies still managed to gain some momentum back in the final seconds of the first.

The first little bit of the second quarter was not as offensive with both teams struggling to put the ball in the basket but the Queens picked things up near the halfway point as guard Sophie Melin (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) would hit back-to-back wide-open threes to give her team a 20-point lead. The Huskies started to pick their game up with four minutes left to go in the half as they came up with multiple stops which transitioned into their offense. But it was RDP who would take a 47-25 lead into the second half. Garcia-Bernal would lead her team with 13 points as she went six-for-eight from the field.

Guard Heena Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts in Political Sciences) would pick up the team’s 15th steal of the game and finish it with a layup to open up the third quarter. But the Huskies really had their long-range shot working in the third which saw the Queens 20-point lead. Red Deer was able to hold Keyano to seven points in the first five minutes but the Huskies were able to expose the gaps in the Queens defense and found themselves just down by 19 with a score of 66-47.

The Polytechnic would start off the final quarter flat-footed and very slow but managed to hold an 18-point lead as they went into a Huskies timeout. Following the timeout, the Huskies out-rebounded the Queens in their own zone and would score a layup after picking up three-straight rebounds. Seconds later, the Huskies would steal the ball at the half line and finish it off with two points.

After giving up six straight points, Head Coach Avery Harrison called a timeout to regroup and tell his team to pick things up. The Queens would finally finish off a layup to put them up 12 points with 30 seconds left to go. This was the first time the Polytechnic would score a point since the seven-minute mark. But their lead going into the fourth quarter was large enough and they would move on to the semi-finals with a final score of 73-63.

Guard Sandra Garcia Bernal picked up her team’s player of the game award with 19 points, four assists and three rebounds.

The Queens will either play the Concordia University Thunder or the Briercrest College Clippers at 6 pm Friday, March 3.
