Crespo and Szymanek named ACAC First-Team All-Stars

Mar 2, 2023 | 9:54 AM

Red Deer Polytechnic and the Athletics department are pleased to recognize Kings and Queens basketball student-athletes, Eduardo Crespo and Amy Szymanek as they were named First-Team All-Stars in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

Szymanek was part of a Queens team that went 12-0 to cap off their regular season. This win streak stretches all the way back to November 26, 2022, when they defeated the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their own gym. Crespo, last year’s ACAC South Rookie of the Year, and the Kings started their season 0-4 but in the last 17 games of the regular season, they went on a 13-4 run to jump into fourth place in the South Division.

Eduardo Crespo (Guard/Forward)

Eduardo Crespo is a six-foot-three forward and is one of three players on the Kings squad that is from Brazil. He is in his second year of the Academic Upgrading program at the Polytechnic This season, he averaged just under 20 points and shot 49.8 per cent from the field. He is a threat wherever he is on the court and wherever Head Coach Darren Graham places him as he is a player who can play all five positions. Graham explained he is like the ACAC version of guard Luka Doncic, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) “He can affect the game with his scoring, playmaking and his rebounding. He has a really diverse skill set that allows him to play all five positions on the court. His size combined with his footwork, court vision, shooting and ability to get to the rim gives him undeniable diversity when it comes to the offensive side of the court.” With a loss in their second play-in game this past weekend against the St. Mary’s University Lightning, the Kings Basketball season has concluded and will move forward to preparing for the 2023/2024 campaign.

Amy Szymanek (Forward)

Stauffer-native Amy Szymanek in her final year of being a Queens student-athlete earned herself a FirstTeam All-Star nod. Szymanek is a five-foot-nine guard/forward, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program at RDP. Throughout the season, she was named Athlete of the Week and was awarded the player of the game honour multiple times. In her five years with the Queens Basketball program, this was her highest points-pergame season as she averaged just under 16 points every game. As one of the veterans of the team, she took on a heavy workload and started 18 games of the 21 in the 2022/2023 campaign. Head Coach Avery Harrison said what makes Szymanek so good is her leadership on and off the court. “Her leadership makes her a huge asset to us. She is one of those slashing players who slashes and drives. These players are hard to defend because you do not know what they are going to do next. I am not even sure if Amy knows what she is going to do next. She is very unpredictable and that’s really hard to defend.” After the longest winning streak in the ACAC Women’s Basketball Conference season, the Queens managed to lock up second place and guaranteed themselves a spot at the Championship in Lethbridge from March 2-4. They will play at 1 pm against the Keyano College Huskies on Thursday. Catch the game live on ACACTV.
