Mar 1, 2023 | 9:57 PM

The Red Deer Rebels lost their second straight eastern road game this week, 5-2 against the Saskatoon Blades Wednesday night at the SaskTel Centre.

Both teams, however, have already secured spots in the WHL playoffs this season.

The Blades opened the scoring in the first period with a power play goal in this game though while the Rebels’ Ollie Josephson sat in the box for checking to the head. Saskatoon’s Egor Sidorov scored his 34th goal this season on Red Deer’s goaltender Kyle Kelsey at 12:38. With the assists made by Aidan De La Gorgendiere and Trevor Wong, the home team led 1-0.

After 20 minutes of play, the Rebels did not make one shot on goal while the Blades made 13.

Just over one minute into the second period, the Blades’ Egor Sidorov scored his second goal this game and 35th of the season. Assisted by Brandon Lisowsky and Tanner Molendyk, the Blades doubled their lead 2-0.

Then with the Rebels’ Ryker Singer serving a tripping penalty, the Blades’ Jayden Wiens seized the power play opportunity with his 14th goal this WHL season. With the help of Egor Sidorov and Trevor Wong, Saskatoon led 3-0.

The Rebels fought back, however, when at 16:49, Dwayne Jean Jr. intercepted a pass from the Blades and passed it to Craig Armstrong who scored his eighth goal of the season on Saskatoon’s netminder Ethan Chadwick. Red Deer was now on the board 3-1 behind the Blades.

However, just 20 seconds later, the Blades’ Brandon Lisowsky countered the goal with his 30th this season, assisted by Blake Gustafson. The home team pushed their lead to 4-1.

The Blades outshot the Rebels 10-5 in the middle frame.

In the final period, with Red Deer’s Ryker Singer in the box for charging, the Blades’ Brandon Lisowsky scored his 31st goal this season and second of the game at 3:55. With Trevor Wong and Aidan De La Gorgendiere claiming the assists, the power play goal put Saskatoon in a 5-1 lead.

A massive fight then broke out on the ice in the eighth minute earning multiple players on both teams a variety of penalties. Saskatoon’s Trevor Wong was given a penalty for being the third man in, Jayden Wiens and Egor Sidorov both for game misconduct and major-fighting and Brandon Lisowsky for interference. The Rebels’ Jhett Larson and Quentin Bourne were both given penalties for game misconduct and major fighting, while Ollie Josephson was given a game misconduct penalty and one major for fighting, the latter served by Ryker Singer.

Even so, the Rebels’ Ben King, on his way to the Blades’ net, turned his back to one of their defencemen, leaving the puck to be quickly scooped up by Frantisek Formanek for his 11th goal this season. At the ninth minute, the Rebels completed the scoring 5-2 behind Saskatoon.

The Blades outshot the Rebels in the third period (15-5) and overall (38-10).

The Rebels went 0/2 on the power play while the Blades went 3/9.

The Blades received all three stars this game with Aidan De La Gorgendiere earning the third star for his two assists. Tanner Molendyk was awarded the second star for his assist while Brandon Lisowsky took home the first star for two goals and one assist.

The Rebels maintain their first place position in the Central Division with a record of 38-17-1-3 while the Blades are in second place in the East Division at 39-13-4-1.

The Rebels will move to Westoba Place on Friday night for their third road game, playing against the Brandon Wheat Kings. Face-off is at 6 p.m. MST with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
