Feb 28, 2023 | 1:39 PM

RDP Athletics has announced its athletes of the week or Feb. 27, and a full weekend preview.

Athletes of the Week

Frankie Sandini
Hometown: West Vancouver, BC
Justice Studies (2nd year)

After multiple accolades this past weekend, libero Frankie Sandini is named this week’s Queens Athlete of the Week. Starting on Wednesday, Sandini was presented with the top liberos award in the ACAC South Division and was named to the All-Conference team. She would hit the court on Thursday night in a crucial match against the Keyano College Huskies where she would backstop the Queens defense with 18 digs on the way to a four-set victory. This win gave the Queens the opportunity to compete for a medal, but it was an uphill battle as they would take on the Lakeland College Rustlers, who were the number one team in the ACAC and only dropped three sets during the regular season. It was a tough match all-around for the Polytechnic as they had trouble getting their offense going but Sandini did everything she could on defense, picking up 20 digs in the three-set loss and earning her the honour of being the player of the match. In the bronze medal match that went to five sets against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, she would pick up 22 digs and earned a bronze medal in the process as they defeated the Kodiaks. Later on in the evening, following the gold medal match, the West Vancouver native was named to the Tournament All-Star performance with a combined 60 digs which led all liberos in the tournament and averaged five digs per set. Congratulations Frankie for all these accolades this past week. We look forward to what’s to come next season!

Arik Weersink
Hometown: Lethbridge, AB
Business Administration (4th year)

After picking up an assist and another shutout this past weekend, goaltender Arik Weersink is this week’s Kings Athlete of the Week. Back on February 18 when the Kings hosted the NAIT Ooks, Weersink stopped all 15 shots to help his team defeat the Ooks 4-0. Six days later, he would shut out the Concordia University Thunder as he steered away 23 shots. In both of these games, Weersink was named player of the game. He even picked up an assist on the third goal against the Thunder. In the final regular season game, he was given the night off which means he is riding a two-game shutout streak and has not allowed a goal in 136 minutes. This goes all the way back to February 17 when he allowed a goal four minutes into the third period against the Ooks but still picked up the win. Along with his two-shutout streak, he also has a win in seven straight games where the Lethbridge goaltender has posted a 2.05 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .923 save percentage. On the year, Weersink has a 2.76 GAA which places him in second but has the best winning percentage in the ACAC at 85 per cent. Congratulations Arik and we look forward to cheering you and the Kings on during the playoffs in a couple of weeks!
