Does anyone remember laughter?

The Piper Creek Optimist Club and Hockey Alberta Foundation are hosting their second Comedy Night this Friday to raise funds for the Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) program.

For just $40, guests can watch comedians Todd Ness and Dave Nystrom perform at Bo’s Bar and Stage (2310 50 Ave) on February 24 from 7:30 – 11 p.m., with 106.7 REWIND radio’s own Ted Emmett as Master of Ceremonies. Tickets include a Troubled Monk beverage and select appetizers provided by the restaurant.

The EKEC program by Hockey Alberta focuses on providing every child in Alberta the opportunity to play hockey by assisting amateur sports and minor hockey organizations, youth and recreation groups, and any other community group with a related idea to get kids active in the sport.

“It’s just heartwarming, for sure, to know a sport that we all love can be played by everyone,” said Piper Creek Optimist Club board member Gavin Heintz, who says 100 per cent of the funds raised at the Comedy Night go towards the program.

According to Heintz, the Club and Foundation together have raised roughly $150,000 for the EKEC program, or approximately $30,000 a year, over the past six years.

Previously, the two groups would raise funds through their Battle of Alberta Hot Stove event, raffling tickets and limo ride prizes to the Edmonton Oilers versus Calgary Flames games.

However, Heintz says last year’s first Comedy Night was so well received by the community in attendance and donations that they wanted to do it again this year.

The EKEC program also offers two grants: the Player Assistance Grant for current or new players who may not have the financial capacity to participate in the sport, and the Community Grant to create a new program or support an existing one focused on recruiting new players to the game.

Tickets for the Comedy Night can be purchased in person at the Foundation’s office located at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre (120 College Cir), on the Ticket Web website, or the Bo’s website.

Door prizes are also available as well as 50/50 tickets and a silent auction table which includes sports tickets, travel packages, golf and more.
