Sylvan Lake RCMP receive report of threat against school in Sylvan Lake

UPDATE: Feb. 7, 12:10 p.m.

RCMP have completed a search of Fox Run School in Sylvan Lake and say nothing suspicious has been located.

RCMP have been advised that the school has been closed for the day with classes resuming tomorrow, Feb. 8, 2023.

Mounties note, however, that the investigation into the threats continues.

Chinook’s Edge School Division Superintendent Kurt Sacher, says safety is always the top priority when situations such as this one arise.

“In this particular circumstance, they (Sylvan Lake RCMP) had indicated that it may take at least a couple of hours,” explains Sachcer. “So we just made a decision, that we felt that it was already going to be disruptive to the school day and potentially could have run on longer, so we thought it was in everyone’s interests if we just close the school for the day to let the police do their work and not be rushed, and have students waiting for any significant amount of time not knowing how the day was going to end.”

Sacher thanks the students, parents and local families for their patience and understanding with the circumstances.

“It’s very disruptive to the flow of their day and their week and we certainly are sorry for the situation,” adds Sacher. “We don’t really have any other choice when it comes to safety. It’s a top priority. When the RCMP say that they need time with the building, we’re going to give them time, whatever the circumstance is. That’s their area of expertise, not ours. We’d rather err on the side of caution and give up a day of learning for safety, so that’s what we chose to do today.”

Hundreds of middle school students in Sylvan Lake have been evacuated from their classrooms this morning due to an alleged threat.

On Feb. 7, 2023, at 8:13 a.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP received a report of a bomb threat made against Fox Run School.

RCMP are currently on scene and the school has been successfully evacuated. RCMP say they continue to evaluate the veracity of the threat and the investigation continues.

Mounties say additional updates will be provided when available.
