The Alberta NDP has named its candidate for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake ahead of the provincial election this spring.

Innisfail Town Councillor Jason Heistad will represent the party in taking on UCP incumbent Devin Dreeshen.

Heistad is a four-term councillor, and also serves as Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

“The people who live in Innisfail-Sylvan Lake have been clear they are looking for a representative who will listen to their concerns, and they aren’t finding that with the UCP,” said Heistad. “I am ready to get to work for the people who live here, and make sure their voices are represented in the legislature.”

Heistad has also sat as a board member for the Public Service Pension Plan for the last three years, and he worked at Olds College for fifteen years as a Recruitment Officer

“I truly believe that public education and more opportunities for Albertans to advance their education through post-secondary is one of our strongest economic drivers in the province,” said Heistad. “We must build on what we have here in central Alberta and support our schools, healthcare facilities, and other public institutions, so folks who live here can study here, work here, and thrive here.”

A 38-year resident on Innisfail, where Heistad lives with his wife, and raised his three adult children. Heistad is also co-founder and the current co-chair of the Innisfail Welcoming and Inclusive Community Committee.

“These communities are very important to me and my family. My grandparents are half an hour away, my children are grown with rewarding careers as teachers, nurses, volunteer firefighters, and in healthcare, and I volunteer regularly with our church. My roots are here, and my priority is here,” concludes Heistad. “I am excited to get to work for this area, and ensure everyone in the riding has a competent, caring, and stable government to improve our healthcare and build a resilient economy.”

Thus far, Heistad and Dreeshen are the only declared candidates in Innisfail-Sylvan Lake.
