Feb. 6 & Feb. 8 Affected

Temporary closure of Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service

Feb 6, 2023 | 9:28 AM

The Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (SLAACS) will be closed Monday, Feb. 6, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will be closed over the same timeframe Wednesday, Feb. 8 due to a gap in physician coverage.

Officials with Alberta Health Services (ahs) say regular hours of operation (7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.) will occur on Feb. 7 and resume on Feb. 9.

This temporary closure is said to be necessary as the service cannot operate without a physician onsite. Options to secure alternative coverage have been exhausted, and reducing hours is a last resort, says AHS.

Patients arriving at the Sylvan Lake Community Health Centre to receive care at the Advanced Ambulatory Care Service during the temporary closure will be redirected to other available care options as appropriate to their needs. Officials note these options include returning when the service resumes, booking an appointment with a family doctor, or calling Health Link at 811 for medical information and advice.

Patients can also access medical care for urgent health concerns from facilities in nearby communities, including Innisfail, Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer.

SLAACS offers diagnosis and treatment of urgent but non-life-threatening conditions. These include sudden illness or injury that could be cared for in a doctor’s office but require immediate attention. Examples of urgent needs include minor cuts or burns, muscle and joint strains, bone fractures, and fever in young children.

SLAACS is not for life-threatening emergencies such as heart attack, signs/symptoms of stroke, head trauma, seizures etc. Patients requiring emergency medical care should call 911.

Booked appointments with other services at the Sylvan Lake Community Health Centre are not impacted by the temporary closure of SLAACS, says AHS.

David Shepherd, Alberta NDP Critic for Health, issued the following statement in response to the doctor shortage in Sylvan Lake:

“It is disheartening to hear that Sylvan Lake’s urgent care centre is reducing its hours yet again because of a doctor shortage.

“Many rural hospitals and health-care centre’s across the province have had to reduce hours or temporarily close ERs because of the chaos in health care caused by Danielle Smith and the UCP government.

“As of Jan. 31, there were 31 temporary service disruptions in facilities across Alberta, according to AHS.

“Health-care centres in Ponoka, Beaverlodge, Boyle, Cold Lake, Grimshaw and Oyen have been impacted by the UCP’s failure to support frontline health-care workers in our province as doctors and nurses leave Alberta or leave the profession entirely.

“Health-care workers deserve better. Albertans deserve better.

“An Alberta NDP government will work collaboratively with frontline health-care workers to end the crisis and chaos in Alberta health care.

“We are committed to launching the largest health-care recruitment campaign Alberta has ever seen and we will provide real resources to health-care workers.”
