Red Deer Polytechnic Athletes of the Week

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics has announced its RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Madison Sansom

Hometown: Saskatoon, SK.

Social Work (3rd year)

The Queens Athlete of the Week is a hockey forward that has been on fire ever since the start of the second semester. Her name is Madison Sansom. Since the game against the SAIT Trojans on January 13, Sansom has put up eight points in her seven-game point streak. With the winning goal on Saturday night in a 2-0 shutout victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers, the Saskatoon native is also on a four-game goal streak as well. This includes two goals against one of the best goaltenders in the ACAC right now, which helped her team pull off two big wins against the Rustlers. With just one point in the first semester, she has a total of nine points, four goals and five assists.

Head Coach Kelly Coulter explained she has really stepped up her game as of late.

“We are starting to see that veteran poise with her. She has been in the league for a number of years and she is more comfortable. Madison sees the ice and is playing with a lot of confidence with the puck, which is nice to see. She always has been a playmaker and goal-scorer which is amazing to see that finally rising up in her game.”

Sansom and the Queens will be off this weekend. They will be back in action at home on Friday, February 17 against the SAIT Trojans.

Congratulations Madison and keep on putting pucks in the back of the net!

2. Maddux Greves

Hometown: Calgary, AB.

Business Administration (5th year)

Regardless of the results this weekend, setter Maddux Greves put his best effort forward and is named the Kings Athlete of the Week. Averaging 9.54 assists-per-set, which places him in second place in the ACAC, Greves helped his team to a three-set victory over the Olds College Broncos with 25 assists on the night. He was awarded the player of the match for leading an effective offense and guiding his hitters to kills. On the defensive side of things, he also had eight digs.

But in a five-set thriller, Greves put forward a season-best 50 assists on the night to give him 1600-plus assists in his career, split between the ACAC and USports. He also brought back his record-winning topspin serve on Saturday night and had six aces against the Broncos. Just under a year ago, he broke the ACAC record for most aces in a match with 14.

This weekend, Head Coach Aaron Schulha will be recognizing and congratulating Maddux on an incredible career as a setter in the ACAC as he is playing in his final year of eligibility. He spent a couple of years with the Trinity Western University Spartans before coming over to the ACAC, where he played for the SAIT Trojans before coming over to Red Deer. The ceremony will follow their match against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves on Saturday afternoon which starts at 3 pm.

Congratulations Maddux on an incredible career and good luck with the rest of the season, keep setting up the offense the way you do.
