Following a pair of victories over the Regina Pats and Spokane Chiefs last week, the Red Deer Rebels fell 4-2 to the Silvertips in Everett, Washington, on Sunday.

It was the second of five games in a row for Red Deer on their US Division road trip.

Everett opened the scoring at 8:08 of the first period when Jesse Heslop beat Rebels goaltender Rhett Stoesser for his seventh goal of the season to put the Silvertips up 1-0. Caden Zaplitny and Beau Courtney assisted on the play.

Red Deer would respond, however, when Frantisek Formanek scored his ninth of the season at 14:23, beating Silvertips netminder Tyler Palmer, to tie it up 1-1. Kai Uchachz and Matteo Fabrizi were credited with the assists.

The period would end with a few penalties though. Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz was assessed a two minute roughing penalty, as was Everett’s Aidan Sutter. The Silvertips Andrew Petruk, however, was given two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting up the Rebels with the man advantage to start the second period.

After 20 minutes, it was tied 1-1, with Everett outshooting Red Deer 12-9.

In the second, Ben King put the Rebels up 2-1 when he scored his 10th of the season just 39 seconds into the middle frame, with Frantisek Formanek and Hunter Mayo assisting on the power play goal.

The Silvertips would tie it up again though when Aidan Sutter scored his fourth goal of the season, unassisted at 10:56 to make it 2-2.

Everett would then take the lead shortly after Red Deer’s Marek Schneider was sent to the box for holding at 14:51.

Austin Roest scored his 28th of the season, on the power play, at 16:51, with assists coming from Ben Hemmerling and Raphael Pelletier, to make it 3-2 Silvertips.

The second period would end with Everett up 3-2 and outshooting Red Deer 13-8, for a two-period shots total of 25-17 in favour of the Silvertips.

The third period wouldn’t see any scoring until late in the game when the Rebels pulled goaltender Rhett Stoesser from the net to add the extra attacker, but Everett capitalized when Jackson Berezowski scored on the empty net at 18:39 to seal the game 4-2. Aidan Sutter and Austin Roest assisted on the play.

The Silvertips outshot the Rebels 12-7 in the third period and 37-24 overall.

Red Deer would go 1/2 on the power play, while Everett went 1/4 with the man advantage.

The game’s third star went to Red Deer netminder Rhett Stoesser, who stopped 33 of 36 shots for a .917 save percentage. Everett’s goaltender Tyler Palmer, meanwhile, was named the game’s second star for stopping 22 of 24 shots for a .917 save percentage, and the win. The Silvertips Austin Roest, who scored the game winner and assisted on the empty net insurance goal, was named the game’s first star.

The loss drops the Rebels record to 34-11-1-3 with 72 points but still first place in the WHL’s Central Division. Everett, meanwhile, improves to 25-22-2-0 with 52 points and fourth place in the league’s US Division.

The Rebels continue their US road trip on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, when they visit Portland to take on the Winterhawks. It’s a 7:00 p.m. face-off PST.
