Nominations open for Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards

Nominations for Alberta’s most prestigious arts award are now open. The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Award celebrates artists who’ve reached the pinnacle of achievement in any of a wide range of disciplines and who either continue to call Alberta home or maintain strong connections to the province and its artistic scene.

Up to three artists may be selected for the honour and receive a handcrafted medal and $30,000 award and a two-week residency at the Banff Centre’s Leighton Artist Studios. Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, awards patron, will present the awards at a ceremony in Medicine Hat Saturday, September 16, 2023.

About the Distinguished Artist Award

The Distinguished Artist Award includes a hand-cast medal, $30,000 cash award and a two-week residency at The Banff Centre Leighton Artists’ Colony. An independent, national adjudication panel of arts experts, overseen by The Banff Centre, reviews nominations and recommends recipients.

About the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation was established in 2003 to raise the profile of the arts in Alberta by celebrating its professional artists. The awards are funded through an endowment established with private donations and gifts from the Province of Alberta and Government of Canada. The Foundation offers two awards programs in alternate years: The Distinguished Artist Awards and the Emerging Artist Awards.
