ICE continue to have Rebels’ number in battle for East’s top spot

Jan 28, 2023 | 9:58 PM

One team has had the Red Deer Rebels’ number this season, and that is the Winnipeg ICE, who defeated Red Deer 5-1 at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Saturday.

Coming in, Red Deer sat one point ahead of Winnipeg with 68 to lead the Eastern Conference, though Winnipeg had five games in hand. The ICE are now one point up with said games in hand.

Earlier this season, Winnipeg and Red Deer went toe-to-toe in back-to-back games on Nov. 8 and 9, the first of which saw the ICE halt the Rebels’ record-breaking 15-game win streak to start the ’22-’23 campaign. The ICE won 3-1 and 7-4 those two nights in the Manitoba capital.

They’ll meet once more in the regular season; Feb. 24 in Red Deer.

Scoring Summary

On this night, it was pretty much all Winnipeg.

Connor McClennon (24th) broke the ice just 92 seconds in for the 1-0 lead.

In the second, Karter Prosofsky (1st) scored the eventual game-winner at 4:33.

Matthew Savoie (19th) scored at 5:49 to make it 3-0, and then the lead was made four when Zack Ostapchuk (14th) scored exactly one minute later. Both goals came with the man advantage.

Red Deer found life late in the second when Mats Lindgren (7th) scored on the power play, cutting the lead to 4-1.

But in the third, Vladislav Shilo (8th) would score some extra insurance, restoring the four-goal lead at 8:27.

And that was how it ended, 5-1 for the visitors.

Playing in his third game since returning from injury a week ago, Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey (15-5-1-3) stopped 33 of 38 shots in the loss. Kelsey now sports a .914 SV% and 2.42 GAA, and has won two of three since returning to the lineup.

Next up for the Rebels is a big one as they host Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats this Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Peavey Mart Centrium. The game, which will likely be Bedard’s final one in Red Deer before being drafted first overall, starts at 7 p.m. with the pre-game live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:30.

Regina is currently fourth in the East Division with just a three point cushion on Brandon. Red Deer is 13 points ahead of Lethbridge for top spot in the Central. The teams are 1-1 against each other this season, with the home team winning each outing.

The Rebels have announced the game is sold out but that they may release a small amount of tickets closer to the day of the game.
