Modest increase in Central Zone flu cases over the past week

Although the number of hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths from the flu in the AHS Central Zone continued to see modest increases last week, the number of new influenza cases identified did slow down somewhat.

According to Alberta Health, there are currently 1,021 cases of influenza confirmed in the Central Zone as of January 7, 2023, up 27 over the past week.

Hospitalizations in the Central Zone due to the flu have risen to 216 over the past week, up 25 from the week before.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions are now at 22, up two from last week, while the number of deaths related to the flu in the Central Zone is now 18, up three from the week before.

Elsewhere throughout the province, the Calgary Zone has 2,866 cases of influenza with 728 hospitalizations, 79 ICU admissions and 26 deaths.

The Edmonton Zone has 2,427 cases of influenza, 533 hospitalizations, 54 ICU admissions, and 21 flu-related deaths.

The North Zone currently has 1,521 cases of influenza, 242 hospitalizations, 22 ICU admissions, and 10 deaths.

The South Zone has 652 cases of influenza as of Jan. 7, with 194 hospitalizations, 19 ICU admissions, and 15 flu-related deaths.
