Nine passengers injured and one fatality in Highway 2 multi-vehicle collision

Nine passengers injured and one fatality have been reported following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2 late Tuesday night.

UPDATE – Dec. 28 11:30 a.m.: Airdrie RCMP remain on scene at a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2 north of Veterans Blvd at Hwy 72 in Rocky View County. One lane heading Northbound is now open, and traffic is moving through the area slowly.

As of Wednesday morning, officials say that Airdrie RCMP, the RCMP Collision Reconstructionist, EMS and area fire departments all remain on scene of the collision on Hwy 2, approximately two kilometres north of Veterans Blvd at Hwy 72 in Rocky View County.

On Dec. 27 at 10:10 p.m., Airdrie RCMP, Airdrie Traffic Services and RCMP Criminal Collision Investigative Team (CCIT) say they responded to reports of 15 to 20 vehicles involved in a collision.

Preliminary information determined that the following vehicles were involved in the incident:

• A commercial vehicle including a trailer
• Five sedan cars
• Four pickup trucks
• Three SUV’s
• A passenger van

Vehicle fires and injuries were reported, according to RCMP, resulting in nine passengers from various vehicles being transported by ground ambulance to area hospitals for various non-life threatening conditions. One fatality was reported on scene.

Details of the cause of the collision remain under investigation; however, Mounties say primary factors appear to be weather and road conditions.

Early Tuesday afternoon, RCMP warned the public of poor road conditions along Hwy 2 between Red Deer and Airdrie with black ice, freezing rain and changing conditions affecting visibility and surface traction on the road.

Additional reports of poor road conditions had been identified in the detachment areas of Redcliff and Strathmore, with various motor vehicle collisions responded to on Highway 1 east of Strathmore and Calgary.

RCMP say they will be on scene for the next several hours and that motorists should expect delays. Traffic continues to be diverted from the area.

They confirm travel along Hwy 2 in the north bound lanes is closed at Veterans Blvd and is being diverted north through Hwy 567.

As well, they say travel along Hwy 2 in the south bound lanes is flowing very slowly with diversions being made to Hwy 72 and Hwy 806.

RCMP continue to warn the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 south of Red Deer and north of Airdrie. They say roads are snow covered and icy and visibility is poor due to blowing snow and fog. As well, they confirm intense fog, icy road conditions and changing weather patterns are dramatically impacting the ability for motorists to see and allow for first responders to attend to those who require assistance.

RCMP recommend drivers avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary, motorists are being asked to slow down and adjust their driving to road conditions.
