Former Sylvan Lake mayor receives medal

A special honour has been bestowed upon a former mayor of Sylvan Lake.

On December 3, 2022 former Town of Sylvan Lake Mayor Susan Samson received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, after being nominated by town council. The award recognizes outstanding service from Albertans who have dedicated themselves to family, community, and country.

Town officials say Samson leads the community as a volunteer and has done so for many years. From 2007 until 2012, Samson served as mayor. She now serves as the Chair of the Urgent Care Committee, helping create the Advanced Ambulatory Care Service in Sylvan Lake.

Town officials acknowledge that Samson continues to spotlight the health and well-being of Lakers, helping to fundraise for medical equipment for the facility. Earlier this year with Sylvan Lake in need of more doctors, she shifted her focus. She is now a part of a task force aimed at recruiting healthcare experts to the community.

“Susan is not only a member of the committees she serves, she is a doer,” says Mayor Megan Hanson. “She defines what it means to be a Laker and unselfishly puts the needs of her community first. She works hard to keep Sylvan Lake an incredible place to live, work, and play. We are very fortunate to have Susan and her many contributions in our community.”

Town officials say Samson’s partnership with healthcare experts in Sylvan Lake has led to better support and service for all Lakers, noting they are thankful for her efforts to keep Sylvan Lake brilliant all year.
