Rebels win sixth straight over Oil Kings

Dec 10, 2022 | 10:04 PM

The Rebels continued their utter dominance of the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday, beating them 5-2 and improving to 6-0 against them on the season — this time on Edmonton’s Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Coming in, the Rebels had outscored the Oil Kings 25-10 in five games, including a 4-2 win in Red Deer Friday; so you can make that 30-12 over six.

With the win, Red Deer (21-5-1-3) has 46 points and sit atop the Central Division; that’s nine points clear of second place Lethbridge, and four points back of Winnipeg for first in the Eastern Conference. Edmonton (4-25-1-0) are last in the entire WHL.

Scoring summary

Red Deer got on the board first, Kai Uchacz (22nd) scoring on the power play at 12:48 of the opening frame. For Uchacz, it was his fourth goal in the last three games.

The score remained 1-0 Red Deer until 4:51 of the third, when Craig Armstrong (3rd) scored once again on the power play

At 8:09, Edmonton’s Noah Boyko (7th) cut the lead to one.

But just 1:38 later, Jayden Grubbe (9th) restored Red Deer’s two-goal lead at 3-1.

Then at 15:44, Hunter Mayo (11th) scored for the third Rebels man advantage goal of the night.

Arjun Bawa (2nd) scored at 19:04 for extra insurance to make it 5-1.

Then Braeden Wynne (1st) scored for Edmonton at 19:26, but it was far too little, too late for the Oil Kings, and this game ended 5-2.
