Rebels stuff Oil Kings 4-2 on Teddy Bear Toss night

Dec 10, 2022 | 10:09 AM

Teddy Bear (and other warm items) Toss Night at the Peavey Mart Centrium Friday didn’t go exactly as planned.

Jayden Grubbe and the 4,800+ in attendance thought he had scored late in the first period causing thousands of items to be thrown to the ice, a yearly tradition by the Rebels and many other hockey teams.

The problem was that the net was deemed off its moorings, so the goal was disallowed following a review.

Keep calm and carry on right… because after all, the Red Deer Rebels had owned the Edmonton Oil Kings coming into their fifth game of the season against one another Friday.

In four games played, all won by the Rebels, Edmonton had been outscored by Red Deer 21-8.

That trend continued on this night as Red Deer doubled up Edmonton 4-2 in what was the last of four straight home games for Red Deer.

With the result, Red Deer now has points in eight of their last 10 games (5-2-1-2), and remain atop the Central Division with 44 points, nine in front of Lethbridge and 12 ahead of Calgary. Edmonton, meanwhile, is last in the division with just nine points over 29 games.

Scoring summary

Scoring didn’t ACTUALLY get going until 6:24 of the second period when Dwayne Jean Jr. (4th) put Red Deer up 1-0 — and of course there were no teddy bears left to chuck.

Rhett Melnyk (8th), however, tied things up just 1:09 later.

But just 1:15 after that, Red Deer retook the lead, Jayden Grubbe (8th) scoring on the power play.

In the third, it was Melnyk (9th) again, at 9:49, equalizing.

But Red Deer broke through late, with Kalan Lind (8th) scoring with just 1:28 left in regulation.

Kai Uchacz (21st) scored an empty netter 21 seconds later to seal the deal.

Rhett Stoesser stoped 19 of 21 shots faced to improve to 8-2-0-0 on the season. Stoesser has a 2.20 GAA and .903 SV%. At the other end, Kolby Hay made 24 saves.
