Alberta’s two deputy chief medical officers resign from their positions; minister

EDMONTON, AB – Alberta’s two deputy chief medical officers of health are leaving their roles.

Health Minister Jason Copping confirmed during question period that both of the doctors have submitted letters of resignation.

He says they continue to work in their roles and Alberta Health is in the process of trying to replace them.

The resignations come less than a month after Dr. Deena Hinshaw, who became the face of Alberta’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was removed from her position.

She was replaced by Dr. Mark Joffe, a senior executive member of Alberta Health Services, on an interim basis.

Copping says his department is doing all it can to support Joffe.

Meantime, David Shepherd, NDP Health Critic, made the following statement in response following the resignations of the two Deputy Chief Medical Officers of Health:

“Health care in Alberta is in crisis, yet the UCP continues to throw the system into further chaos instead of providing stability and support.

“The Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge is nearing the limits of its capacity and the Alberta Children’s Hospital has been forced to bring in a temporary trailer to expand the size of its waiting room.

“I fear that the resignations of the Deputy Chief Medical Officers of Health will lead to further chaos.

“Danielle Smith has given credit to the opinions of conspiracy theorists such as Paul Alexander, who compared the COVID-19 vaccine to a bioweapon, while deriding those of public health experts in Alberta.

“The UCP are not valuing public health care — and public health experts — at a time when Albertans need it most.”
