Rebels downed 5-2 by Warriors

Dec 3, 2022 | 9:47 PM

The Red Deer Rebels were unable to keep up with the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium, losing 5-2.

The result comes a night after they lost to Saskatoon 4-3 in OT.

The two teams had met twice this season, both times in Moose Jaw, and each result a 4-2 victory for the Rebels, on Oct. 14 and Nov. 5, respectively.

Coming in, Red Deer was 18-4-1-3, second in the Eastern Conference and first in the Central Division with 40 points, while the Warriors were 17-9-0-0, fourth in the Eastern Conference and third in the East Division with 34 points.

Red Deer was 3-3-1-3 in their last 10, and Moose Jaw was 7-3-0-0.

On this night, though it was Moose Jaw who controlled, scoring just 88 seconds into the game, as Brayden Yager (15th) put it past Kyle Kelsey for an early 1-0 lead.

There was no more scoring until the 36 second mark of the second period when Mats Lindgren (4th) equalized for Red Deer.

At 8:18 and 12:52, respectively, however, Matthew Gallant (1st) and Maximus Wanner (6th) scored for Moose Jaw to put the Warriors up 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Early scoring was a trend on Saturday, as Christoffer Sedoff (2nd) scored a mere 33 seconds into the final frame, cutting the lead to 3-2.

But Red Deer couldn’t find the tying goal.

Ryder Korczak (5th, 6th) scored at 8:26 for the 4-2 lead, and then into an empty net at 17:33.

And that was all that she wrote.

Between the pipes, the Rebels’ Kyle Kelsey stopped 16 of 20, and former Rebel Connor Ungar made 41 saves on 43 shots faced for Moose Jaw.
